Join the IAM
The IAM’s mission is Service to the Community and Justice on the Job. Justice on the Job starts with organizing a union. Why join a union? Quite simply, there is strength in numbers.  Statistics show that union members achieve higher wages, better benefits and more job security than their non-union counterparts.

Take the On-Line Organizing Survey
You can make your future more secure and help get a better contract.  Non-union jobs compete directly with our Union wages and benefits.  By having more Union workers in your area and in your industry you gain by having more power in the local economy.  We need your help to make Union members more powerful.  Please take a moment and complete the questions below and return this to your shop steward or Union office. Every completed survey is also entered into a drawing for a $100 prize.

Please fill out the survey and mail or email it to the Union Hall.

At-Will Employment

Did you know that "At-Will" employment is actually rooted in slavery?  Even under today's "modern" laws, employees are still considered "servants" and employers are called "masters."

Over 60 million Americans go to work each day at "at-will" employment, meaning they have the right to quit, as opposed to being slaves.  However, employers retain the right to fire.  Over 2 million workers are fired each year and an estimated 200,000 are never given a reason for their discharge.

Under a union contract, employers must show "just cause" for an employees discharge - a far cry from "just because" when they are at-will.

Union Members LIVE Better
Union members have higher average wages and better benefits, in addition to having a voice on the job.  Additionally, Union jobs raise the standard of living for the communities around them.

Union members earn an average of 30% more than nonunion workers, and women who are union members average 33% higher than nonunion women.

  • Nonunion workers are five times more likely to lack health insurance coverage.
  • In 2007, 78% of union workers were covered by employer-provided health insurance, compared to 49% of nonunion workers.
  • 67% of union members had guaranteed pensions, compared to 15% of nonunion workers.
  • 60% of union members had short term disability benefits, versus 35% in nonunion jobs.
  • Union workers also averaged 15 days of vacation, compared to 11.75 for nonunion workers.
About the IAM
The IAMAW, or International Association of Machinists and Aerospace workers, was founded in 1888 in a railroad pit in Atlanta, Georgia.  The IAM is composed of a number of District and Local Lodges, organized along regional and industrial lines, each with particular functions and responsibilities.

There are 1143 IAM Local Lodges in every region of the United States, Canada, Guam, Puerto Rico and Panama.  Lodges range in size from fewer than 100 members to more than 10,000.

The IAM is here to assist employees and groups who want to form a union.  The IAM is also here to negotiate your first contract and provide you with all the services the IAM has to offer.  Contact us today!
